Stage Manager Tag: Lillian U

We are asking stage managers around the world, in a stage manager tag, some key questions about their job. Here is Lillian U.

1. Are you a minimalist or a hoarder Stage Manager?

I’m a low-waste minimalist/sustainability nerd in real life but a total hoarder as a stage manager. You just never know when something might come in handy!

2. What do you always have with you on stage?

It’s been a while since I’ve run a floor plot – but I always have my smartwatch on, good sneakers and a sharpie.

3. What’s in your kit?

What’s not in my kit? I have a small standard kit that I take into rehearsal rooms and sits by me at Prompt Corner which includes stationary, needles and thread, hair ties, bobby pins, mints (shout out to all the MDs/Directors/Creatives who always come lookin’!), earplugs, bandaids, velcro cable-tidies, push pins and lip balm among random other things (See? Total hoarder). I also never go anywhere without my water bottle, Keep cup and laptop.

4. Mac or PC?

Mac

5. What’s in your pencil case?

Just the staples: pencils, pens, highlighters, sharpies, erasers, steel ruler etc and the bonus emergency opening night lipstick/mascara (because we deserve to look good too!)

6. Favourite colour highlighter

Yellow – a classic.

7. Favourite pencil

8. What may be surprising that you don’t use

Stopwatch – I worked in dance for a long time and everything was timecoded and show running times were so consistant that I never needed it!

9. Coffee or Tea

Tea! I haven’t had a coffee since drama school and I don’t regret it. I’ve worked 18 hour event days on eating properly (that means minimal candy) and a single Berrocca. I do love a Earl Grey at morning tea break during rehearsals though.

10. Favourite Genre to work in

Circus and any kind of Music/Movement based Performance

BONUS QUESTION
11. Advice for new Stage Managers

Take a breath. Take stock. and Often. Be aware of yourself and what the context of your body, your culture and your energy brings to a space. Never stop listening and learning – keep evolving always. Pause before charging in.
