We are asking stage managers around the world, in a stage manager tag, some key questions about their job. Here is Diana Knoepfle based in Tucson, Az USA.

Hoarder; because of my freelance work.

Two flashlights, gerber multitool, adjustable wrench.
3. What’s in your kit?
It depends on the show I’m stage managing at the time, but my kit always includes pencils, spare batteries, spare flashlights, my small stand light, three hole punch, first aid kit, sewing kit, snack bars, sanitary supplies, spare masks, disposable gloves, sanitizer, travel sized Lysol spray, post-it notes, usb chargers for most devices, iPad, and my beloved stage manager rubber duck.
4. Mac or PC?
5. What’s in your pencil case?
Mini stapler, pencils, highlighters, erasable colored pencils, post-it notes, reinforcements, hand sanitizer.
6. Favourite colour highlighter
Yellow followed by light green.
7. Favourite pencil
Heh; a sharp pencil is useful.
8. What may be surprising that you don’t use?
Chances are, I have used most things over time.
9. Coffee or Tea?
Coffee is the nectar of the gods!
10. Favourite Genre to work in
I am a both a dance and stage play SM primarily as those are my regular employers, but I do enjoy calling musicals and one of my very favorite productions was a multi-media live concert that I’ve called for a couple of years. Challenging and enjoyable!
11. Advice for new Stage Managers
Be as versatile as you can. Learn how to set/program lighting, edit sound, be willing to lay the marley floor down for a dance show. I have found my background as a past technical director helps me to be able to talk on the same level as the technical team on any given production and able to translate back to the rest of the production team accurately when needed. It makes you more employable!
