The Stage Manager Tag: Kate Mielke

We are asking stage managers around the world, in a stage manager tag, some key questions about their job. Here is Kate Mielke based in Las Vegas, NV USA.

1. Are you a minimalist or a hoarder Stage Manager?

Minimalist (except for sharpies, which gravitate towards me).

2. What do you always have with you on stage?

Flashlight, spike and glow tape, black and silver sharpie.

3. What’s in your kit?

Sharpies, frixion erasable pens, fancy pencils for me, less fancy pencils to share, post it notes, backup chargers, tape measure, safety pins, stain remover wipes, mini deodorant, multi-tool, granola bar, Altoids, reusable water bottle … (that’s MY kit… the theaters I work with usually have an office/consumables budget that I can use for shared supplies).

4. Mac or PC?

Mac.

5. What’s in your pencil case?

USB drive, pens/pencils/sharpies, Advil, Ricola, Listerine strips, a drawing a friend’s kid made for me.

6. Favourite colour highlighter

Green.

7. Favourite pencil

Mechanical (usually bic, unless I’ve recently been to Japan and went on a bender in a stationary store).

8. What may be surprising that you don’t use?

Coffee (gave myself an ulcer as an intern).

9. Coffee or Tea?

Tea, Earl Grey.

10. Favourite Genre to work in

Circus.

BONUS QUESTION
11. Advice for new Stage Managers

Diversify where you can. Learn about rigging/automation/wardrobe/audio/LX/video … it helps when you’re in conversation with different departments to know the vocabulary. Also, drink water and take your breaks.
