Barcelona Opera House Launches Streaming Service

Barcelona Opera House Launches Streaming Service

The Gran Teatre del Liceu – the opera house – in Barcelona just launched a streaming service at the end of November 2021. They premiered this new point of connection for their, now also international, audiences with a classical concert, featuring works of Mozart, Ravel, and Berlioz.

The first time I set foot into the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona was to spontaneously watch a magnificent production of Madama Butterfly with my partner.

I have to admit that I did fall asleep in the middle of the 4-hour long performance. But that, I promise you, had nothing to do with the enchanting opera house itself, or with the production, but rather with my attention span and my life-long struggle with operas which are too long.

My then partner and I were both blown away by the magnificence of this opera building, the great acoustics, as well as the high quality of the production. It was a moment which we will forever hold in our respective memories.

Thus, I am more than delighted to be able to tell you that from now on you’ll be able to enjoy performances by the Barcelona opera house from anywhere across the globe – as long as you have a good wireless connection.

Of course, it’ll never be quite the same as sitting in this grand palace of the arts. But at least, it’ll give you a taste… and one day, hopefully, when you travel through Barcelona, you’ll be able to enjoy a live opera or classical concert being performed on their stage.

The Barcelona opera house launched their streaming service on Sunday, the 21st November, 2021.

The premiere concert was presented by Gustavo Dudamel, who directed the Paris Orchestre de l’Opera National. Their program featured pieces by Mozart, as well as by two French composers: Maurice Ravel and Hector Berlioz.

The new streaming channel Liceu + is a free service for registered users. And it will allow them to enjoy a whole range of the opera house’s audiovisual content from the comfort of their couch.

Such as exclusive interviews, featured stories, performances, and even historic events like, for example, the 175th anniversary of the cultural landmark on the Catalan capital’s Las Ramblas boulevard.

According to the Liceu, the streaming project aims to offer open content to make opera more accessible for everyone.

The content can be accessed on the Liceu+ website, or via Android and iOS mobile apps, as well as using Smart TVs.

Content will be published in Catalan, Spanish, and English. With subtitles available in all three languages. Liceu+ will also have podcasts in Catalan and Spanish.

Streaming as such is not completely new for the Liceu organizers. The opera house has already streamed live performances to cinemas across the globe for the last twenty years.

Back in 2001, Liceu staged La Traviata as the first of several concerts that followed on the big screen, like Macbeth (2016) or Romeo and Juliet (2018).

The Opera House in Barcelona has been home to international artists like Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and Montserrat Caballé, the Catalan soprano most associated with the Liceu.
