Professor Francois Colbert C.M. is the head of the Master of Management in International Arts Management at HEC Montreal. Professor Colbert has been active in the field of arts and culture for over 30 years, particularly in the performing arts, museum, and film sectors. In this article, I would like to recommend three books on Arts Management and Art Marketing Professor Colbert has written.

First a little bit more background on Professor Colbert…

In May 2002, he was awarded the Order of Canada for his many achievements and for his unique contributions in developing the field of arts management in Canada.

In 2005, he was made Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Professor Colbert’s main publication thus far is Marketing Culture and the Arts, which was published in 15 languages.

He has given numerous training and professional development seminars in arts management, with a focus on the field of marketing management in a cultural context.

Francois Colbert is a past or present member of the board of directors of twenty-two cultural organizations and served as vice-chair of the Canada Council for the Arts for eight years, until 2003. He has also been on the Board of other large organisations such as Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and Radio-Québec.

Professor Colbert teaches two courses offered as part of the graduate program in arts management, Marketing Cultural Organizations and Cultural Policies, and the doctoral seminar called Fundamentals of Arts Marketing.

Overall, he is the author of more than 200 publications. Including articles in refereed and non-refereed journals, books, chapters in books, proceedings, bibliographies, and research reports, mainly on marketing of the arts.

In addition, he has organized numerous conferences addressing topics related to cultural management. He has also given many talks and seminars on arts management both in Quebec and Canada and in 25 other countries.

Here three of his books on Arts Management and Marketing:

Strategic Management of Arts Organizations

This book explores strategic decisions that an arts organization must make in order to thrive in the market. Each strategy is exemplified with real cases. Therefore, this book can be useful when analyzing the big picture.

Consumer Behaviour and the Arts (Discovering the Creative Industries)

What do we know about the behaviour of cultural consumers? What basic theories should a manager be aware of when considering the arts market?

This book, written by Professors François Colbert and Alain d’Astous, will demonstrate how the mind of patrons works, and can help understand what actions should be taken to bring a diversified audience, or even a non-audience, to the theatres or museums.
