30th Annual SAG Awards

Last Saturday was the 30th Annual SAG Awards and there were reunions and smiles everywhere, even for devils who wear Prada. The film Oppenheimer is now favourable to do well at the Oscars, while Barbie stars were left bewildered why they were left behind in a male dominated industry again.

The film Oppenheimer took home three Screen Actors Guild Awards including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. The film continues to do well after its massive success in the box office, Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and now taking home more trophies from the SAG Awards. This of course lines up the film nicely for the Oscars with its 13 nominations. Oppenheimer is currently the projected winner for several of this year’s Oscars Awards.

Briefly before these awards were given out, Robert Downey Jr. made a statement on how “Margot Robbie is not getting enough credit, in my opinion.”

Oppenheimer, which is directed by Christopher Nolan, is a historic dramatic piece that follows the life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy). The physicist, who had a large hand in the development of the atomic bomb, is recruited to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history.

This helped end World War 2. Throughout the film, the audience see Oppenheimer’s life from university days all the way to post-WW2, where his fame saw him embroiled in political machinations.

This left Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” to be left in the dust with its four nominations and left the 30th annual SAG Awards with no wins. However, females still dominated the stage for the SAG Awards. There was a reunion between Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and Meryl Streep reminding fans of the iconic roles between the three leading ladies in The Devil Wears Prada. This reunion comes just in time for the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada the musical, which is opening at London’s Dominion Theatre in October of this year. Emily blunt tried to rush Meryl Streep with one of Streep’s own lines from the movie as she tried to open and read the contents of the envelope saying:

“By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.”

Fans also instantly noticed Anne Hathaway wearing a cerulean dress, making a nod to one of the most notable lines from the movie, again said by Meryl Streep:

“But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.”
