66th Annual Grammy Awards

During the 66th annual Grammy Awards, some rare appearances were made and fans everywhere were excited about the return of some favourites in the entertainment industry. The nominees are chosen by members of the Recording Academy the night before the awards. The nominations for this year’s Grammy Awards were announced in mid November last year.

Rising to stardom in the late 1980s, Tracy Chapman (4 time Grammy Award winner) famously performed ‘Fast Car’ in 1988. In a rare sighting, she joined singer-songwriter Luke Combs and performed a duet at the 66th annual Grammy Awards of the song after Luke Combs covered ‘Fast Car’ on his 2023 country album. This was the first time after nine years that Tracy Chapman performed the song live.

Taylor Swift was also honoured by a rare sighting of a fellow Pop Icon, Celine Dion. Taylor Swift was presented another Grammy Award, making her the only artist to win album of the year four times. Her previous wins were for Fearless, 1989, Folklore, and now Midnights. Taylor Swift in total has won 14 Grammys, making history at the awards. She also surprised the audience by announcing in her acceptance speech that she will be releasing her new album “The Tortured Poets Department” on 19 April. This was the first time in months that Celine Dion was seen in public due to her ongoing health issues that she told her fans she was diagnosed with in December of 2022. It is wonderful to see a fellow female music icon celebrating another one.

As part of her speech, Taylor Swift said:

“All I want to do is keep being able to do this. I love it so much. It makes me so happy. It makes me unbelievably blown away that it makes some people happy who voted for this award too. All I want to do is keep doing this. So thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to do what I love so much.”

Beyonce’s husband, Jay-Z, made an appearance with their daughter Blue Ivy. Blue is rarely seen in public, especially at award ceremonies with her parents and fans have been bombarding the internet with theories about Blue and her appearance that night. For example, one fan commented “Bro why is blue ivy so tall, she’s still a kid.” bringing questions to fans about Blue’s actual age. Jay-Z also called out the Grammy Awards stating that his wife “has more Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year.” He was later videotaped drinking out of his Grammy Award celebrating the achievement.

Leading a memoriam to Sinead O’Connor, Stevie Wonder made a public appearance and performed live for the first time since 2022. His last public performance was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary where he performed 10 songs including Michael Jackson’s ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’, Marvin Gaye’s ‘Mercy, Mercy Me’, and ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours’.

With the recent public appearances of such artists, fans are left questioning if they are coming out with new music soon themselves or just supporting those that come after them.
