Broadway Announces Vaccine and Mask Requirement

Broadway Announces Vaccine and Mask Requirement

The Broadway League has announced a vaccine and mask requirement for all 41 Broadway theatres in New York City for all performances through October 2021. Audience members, performers, backstage crew and theatre staff are required to be fully vaccinated with an FDA or WHO authorized COVID-19 vaccine. Audiences are also required to wear masks at all times inside the theatre except while eating or drinking.

Guests will be required to show valid proof of vaccination at time of entry alongside their ticket. Those who are unable to be vaccinated, such as children under the age of 12, people with medical conditions or those with a “closely held religious belief that prevents vaccination” must provide recent proof of a negative COVID-19 test before entering. All others must be fully vaccinated, meaning the performance must be at least 14 days after their second dose of a two-dose vaccine, or 14 days after their single dose vaccine. Masks must be worn at all times inside the theatre as well except for “designated areas” where they can be removed for eating and drinking.

“As vaccination has proven the most effective way to stay healthy and reduce transmission, I’m pleased that the theatre owners have decided to implement these collective safeguards at all our Broadway houses,” President of the Broadway League Charlotte St. Martin said in a statement announcing the requirements. “A uniform policy across all New York City Broadway theatres makes it simple for our audiences and should give even more confidence to our guests about how seriously Broadway is taking audience safety.”

This policy will be in place through October, with the Broadway League anticipating a policy review in September where some restrictions may be relaxed for November 2021 and beyond, “if the science dictates.”

Nick Scandalios of the Nederlander Organization spoke for theatre owners, saying “With these procedures in place and recognizing the high vaccination rates among NYC audiences, Broadway continues to make safety our priority. As we get ready for Broadway’s big comeback, the entire theatre community is committed to the highest level of public health standards. We’re all eager to welcome our many patrons and fans back to the magic of Broadway.”

This news was followed by NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio’s announcement that at least one dose of the vaccine will be required for many indoor activities, including indoor dining, gyms and performances, which includes Broadway.

These NYC measures, which will begin a transition period later this month, being fully enforced in September, are a way to curb a third wave of the pandemic during the spread of the Delta variant. Together, with these provisions, the theatre industry hopes to return to normal while keeping audiences, casts and crews alike as safe as possible.
