London’s Frozen Announces Closing

After three years on the West End, London’s Frozen announces closing dates. The news came as quite the surprise to fans and critics alike as the show has done well on the West End and the franchise remains a staple point in the Disney company. The show opened on the West End soon after theatres began to reopen after the pandemic, and to see it close after only a few years has everyone reeling to get last minute tickets as they come on sale.

The show will officially be closing just before the peak holiday season on 8 September of this year. After opening in August of 2021, Disney’s Frozen has already welcomed 2.8 million people at Theatre Royal Drury Lane and is expected to have dozens of sold out shows in the upcoming months before the cast take their final bows.

Director of Frozen, Michael Grandage, said as news of the closing date broke:

“It has been a joy to be part of the Frozen journey in London. Working with the team at Disney, the brilliant creative team, and the incredible cast have made this one of my happiest theatre experiences.”

Since Disney’s Frozen on the West End opened three years ago, it has been the recipient of several awards from the London theatre scene. Frozen the musical won 7 WhatsOnStage Awards and 4 Olivier Award nominations. The show runs for 2 hours and 15 minutes, including the interval. Since the announcement of the closing, the majority of third party websites and ticket brokers in London have been selling tickets for the musical speedily with shows selling out fast. The final performance of Frozen has tickets priced starting at £45.36 and going upwards to £297.96 for the best seats.

No official statement has come about a UK and Ireland tour of the hit musical, Frozen, but it is expected. Fans of the West End are already guessing at what could be replacing the musical with the top pick being another Disney show as once Frozen closes, The Lion King will be the only Disney musical on the West End. Another top contender to replace the hit musical is Burlesque The Musical, as it has already extended its run in Glasgow to accommodate ticket sales. Whatever the case may be, fans worldwide are disheartened to hear that the ice queen herself will no longer be on London’s West End for this winter.
