Women in the Entertainment Industry: Ronel Jordaan

Ronel Jordaan

We are asking women in the entertainment industry around the world some key questions about their life and career. Here is Ronel Jordaan based in Cape Town, South Africa.

1. In which part of the industry do you work?

Currently I’m the production manager at the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Theatre Dance and Performance studies and I come from a back ground of touring Stage Management.

2. Have you drawn professional inspiration from other women in the entertainment industry? How have they inspired you?

I can’t say one women in particular has inspired me, more the collection. The way women continue to excel at roles often considered more suited to men. I’ve watched women run the most incredible stage shows and raise their kids at the same time. Women with such dedication to creating spectacular audience experiences and at the same time keeping everyone safe (literally in some cases!). The way they listen to a show, the beat that makes it tick, is awe inspiring and often very humbling. If you’re one of those women you inspire me already.

3. What would you tell young women who are just starting out? What would you like them to know?

Know that the technical side of the entertainment industry is not for everyone. The hard days will be extremely hard. The good days can make you fly. Believe that you belong and you’ll have an amazing time.

4. What is the best piece of career advice you have ever received?

Always arrive early.

5. Please share one of your toughest challenges in your career. How did you overcome?

Standing my ground in the face of aggressive opinions. Often these moments stem from being tired and the ‘ask’ of the show being hard. I learned that ‘stepping away in my mind’, taking a breath and understanding that this moment is one in many that makes a show work is how you hold your confidence and peace of mind.

6. What is your favorite musical or play?

This is not a fair question!!!

7. What is your morning routine?

I enjoy getting out of bed at a regular time, having breakfast, me time and then face the demands of the day. Even on tour or with a grueling tech schedule.

8. Drink of Choice?

Coffee and water (lots of water).

9. What is a phrase you are known for saying?

Lets go make look see.

10. If you are not a mother and are willing to share your reasons, we would love to celebrate those choices. Please feel free to share your journey.

Honestly, years on the road never made it a possibility.

BONUS QUESTION
15. What advice would you give to other women in the industry?

Always be real about the good and the bad.
