Top 5 Broadway Love Songs

Top 5 Broadway Love Songs

There are many things that Broadway knows how to do well. From the big opening numbers, to the set pieces they convey. Broadway has also been known to keep us swooning with love songs. There are of course the classics like ‘If I Loved You’ from Carousel, the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, or something with a bit more humour for those who fall for the one who makes them laugh like ‘Do You Love Me’ from Fiddler On The Roof which opened on Broadway in 1964. Ranking the top 5 Broadway love songs was not easy when taking everything into consideration.

I’ll Cover You- RENT

Starting out the top 5 Broadway love songs is I’ll Cover You from the 1996 musical. Following the thriving bohemian culture, this song is sure to win over a first love or longtime sweetheart. It’s all about two people who have fallen head over heels in just one magical night of finding each other in a big city. This song has been a hit Queer musical theatre love song since the opening of the show. This life-affirming declaration of love proves that love is love.

As Long As You’re Mine- Wicked

Although the main storyline follows the two leading ladies, it’s impossible to defy the gravitational pull between Elphaba and Fiyero. This song is for the not-so-typical lovers. Instead of the big strong man coming to save the helpless damsel, Elphaba uses her powers to save the man she loves from the pains of torture after sharing a brief moment of passion showing the range (both vocally and emotionally) of both characters.

Only Us- Dear Evan Hansen

Overcoming grief with someone you love can be trying to say the least. This Broadway love song has proven that moving forward together and focusing on the love you have can help with the pain of losing someone you love. While Dear Evan Hansen is newer to Broadway, this contemporary show has captivated audiences with insight to what it’s like to be in high school in modern times, and feel different yet want to connect.

A Heart Full of Love- Les Miserables

First impressions can be awkward when you’re around someone you have a crush on. But crushing on someone is a classic part of any love story. This classic song helps portray what it’s like to feel that amazing validation of having your crush like you back. An unrequited love, an endless love. Someone that would do anything for you. All that needs to be said in one song.

Can You Feel The Love Tonight- The Lion King

It would be rude to not have a Disney Broadway love song as a part of this list. It also shows the growing bond between best friends to lovers. Taking that extra step can be terrifying. Admitting you have romantic feelings for someone you’ve known your whole life and who has always been a part of your life as your best friend. This song can help you do just that.

A special shout out does deserve to go to ‘Helpless’ from Hamilton, ‘All I Ask of You’ from The Phantom of the Opera, ‘Lay All Your Love On Me’ from Mamma Mia, ‘Till There Was You’ from The Music Man, ‘Falling Slowly’ from Once, ‘All I’ve Ever Known’ from Hadestown, ‘I Can Hear The Bells’ from Hairspray, and ‘People Will Say We’re In Love’ from Oklahoma. These special love songs are great in their own ways and classics all of their own.
