Is Coldplay’s Kinetic Energy Tour The Future Of Sustainability?

Is Coldplay’s Kinetic Energy Tour The Future Of Sustainability? TheatreArtLife

Coldplay have launched their Kinetic Energy Tour as a means of incorporating sustainability into music and entertainment, and pledging their devotion to being more green and eco-friendly on their new Music Of The Spheres World Tour in 2022.

How does it work?

The band have long been fans of innovative methods of working, as recognised with their LED wristbands for audiences to light up the scene in recent years. In London earlier in October however, Coldplay introduced us to a new collection of stationary bikes as well as a kinetic dancefloor as a means of generating energy. The aim is for the audience to ‘get their groove on’ while on the dancefloor, and head off for a quick bike ride when the mood takes them. This kinetic energy generated will help to power a rechargeable battery.

Coldplay’s efforts in this area started pre-pandemic when back in 2019 they made the decision to stop touring until there were more eco-friendly means available. The band have also announced that they will plant a tree for every ticket sold on the new tour.

Music Of The Spheres Tour

Speaking to the BBC, lead singer Chris Martin said he was prepared for a backlash in reaction to the band’s efforts, explaining that he hoped this process would be helpful longer term for all musicians and entertainers by figuring out how to make tours more sustainable:

“I don’t mind any backlash at all. We’re trying our best, and we haven’t got it perfect. Absolutely. We always have backlash for everything. And the people that give us backlash for that kind of thing, for flying, they’re right. So we don’t have any argument against that.

We could stay at home and that may be better. But we want to tour and we want to meet people and connect with people – so try and do it in the cleanest way possible.”

Similarly, the statement on the band’s website explained:

“Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together.

At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far.

If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

The band demoed the equipment in London in October, and the full world tour will start in March 2022 in Costa Rica, which is a place of note as it is one of the most successful locations in the world for generating renewable energy.

While Chris Martin is ready for the ‘backlash’, looking at the band’s website in more detail on how they’re making this happen is genuinely impressive – there is in depth information and a break down on all sustainability initiatives they are implementing, which includes a detailed rundown on:

  • CO2 emissions
  • Power
  • Travel
  • Stage show
  • Fans
  • Water
  • Waste
  • Food
  • Merchandise
  • Good causes
  • Nature
  • Transparency
